May I have the Envelope, Please?by Dennis DuncanEvery year, the Board of Directors nominates fencers for the Dairy Producers Fitness Foundation Awards in 4 categories: Junior Male, Junior Female, Senior Male and Senior Female. Other Awards may also be proposed at the Annual General Meeting. This year's candidates are:
Awards can also be made in the following categories: Award Based on ServiceOccasionally a candidate may be proposed on grounds other than competition records. Two such situations will be acceptable.1) One Time Situation - Occasionally an individual makes such an outstanding contribution in a single situation that he/she deserves recognition. For example: coordinating the fencing event at the Canada Games in outstanding fashion, coaching an international team, or serving Canada as an official might be examples of these types of situations. Throughout his/her career an individual may receive the award under these conditions more than once. The normal work expected of a Director shall not constitute grounds for granting the award. 2) Long Time Service - For a long and distinguished contribution as a coach, administrator, official, etc., an individual may receive the award, but only once in a life-time. Special HonourThis award may be given as an honour to some individual beyond the Association as an indication of esteem. So, now you know how it is done. You might start to think of whom in your community may be deserving of such an honour and forward this information to your Director throughout the year so that the deserving person can be nominated. Far too often, the diligence and hard work of our members goes unnoticed and unrewarded to our ultimate detriment. Sincere praise and appreciation cost nothing to give but are received as riches. The successful candidates will be announced in the September SaskSword. The time, date and place of the Awards Banquet will also be published at that time. |

Who's Doing What?by JoveCongratulations to Sheila ffolliott and Ed Lomas. They will be married on June 1st at a small ceremony just outside Saskatoon. Sheila is an International "C" Referee and has presided throughout Canada and in Europe. Ed has been a Level I NCCP fencing coach in Saskatchewan for several years. This leads to a few interesting speculations. Does Sheila need coaching? Does Ed need to be shown the rules? All jesting aside, sincerest congratulations!!Sabreurs, beware! A news flash from Vancouver boldly states that Virgilio Vasquez, aka "Tony" is in fighting trim and has just ordered 2 electric sabres - and a Dremel tool to sharpen them. Need a loan? Corrinne Seguin has just been appointed Manager of the Bank of Montreal in Sutherland and is sure to lend a sympathetic ear to parents who need a loan for all that expensive equipment. Congratulations, Corrinne! You have earned it. Anna-beth Zulkoskey, our Executive Director, was selected to run the Directoire Technique at both the Westerns and Nationals this year. Last year, she was awarded the same responsibility for the Commonwealth Games. Rumour hath it she is waiting for a phone call from Atlanta. Allan Francis, aka "Mr. Sweat" has been accepted into an architectural course in Calgary that starts this Fall. Long time acquaintances reveal that this has been his dream since he was about seven years old and playing with his first set of Lego blocks. With the election of Douglas Brecht, a Saskatoon policeman and Darryl Shirkey, a Regina lawyer, The SFA Board of Directors meetings may soon sound like episodes of "Law and Order". I keep hearing rumours that the way some of our fencers compete is a crime. Fencing criminals, beware! The Dynamic Duo is watching! Why is Dennis Wendel, the SFA Treasurer, building his own black powder pistols? And why did he ask the blind Director to test fire the darn things? Are the budget meetings getting a bit rowdy? Jake Wetzel is now a world class mountain biker. He has recently donated fencing equipment back to the Saskatoon Fencing Club. Thank you, Jake. It is a real pity that the 2 sports could not be combined. Sabre and mountain biking. Cavalry charges anyone? Bert Gaudet is building a dog house to complement his new domicile in Prince Albert. Does it have double occupancy? Gossips and snoops can leave their reports on the Editor's answering machine (306) 664- 8527. Facts preferred, innuendo invited. Brag sheets also accepted along with Master Card. |

What's Afoot?by Dennis DuncanA fair amount of this issue is taken from the Annual General Meeting of the Saskatchewan Fencing Association held May 4, 1996. I have thought of guest columns that would involve more of the Saskatchewan Fencing community and would like to get feedback from you on these. For example, I want input from parents to be published under the heading, "Married, with Fencing Children". This would be an opportunity for parents to express any concerns they have regarding Fencing; the cost, the scheduling difficulties, travel out of town arrangements, what are my children getting out of Fencing? and so forth. As parents, you are a valued part of Fencing but all too often, your voice is heard only in your homes. Here's a chance to talk to everyone in Saskatchewan with similar problems and circumstances. I would also accept stories about embarrassing incidents about your children. I know parents take great delight in relating these at family gatherings, the more embarrassing to the children the better. (i.e. Something along the lines of: "one more word, buster and I send in that story about when you painted the cat to match your wagon". "Ah, Mom, you wouldn't". "Just try me.") I am also aware that a large number of active fencers are into games such as Magic, Dungeons & Dragons and such. I was a DM for about 12 years and still play on computer with a group that gathers most Friday nights. I am also playing Diplomacy in the Canadian Challenge. I am thinking of titling that column, "Let the Games Begin" and put out a list of fencers, along with phone numbers, game titles and experience levels. I have a friend who works at the game store in Regina who edits that city's game magazine. It never hurts to find new opponents who don't know your tactics as yet. There is a long history of Fencing in Saskatchewan that goes unappreciated. I would enjoy hearing about these elder fencers (some in their mid 30s) who have gone to success in other fields. We often claim that Fencing develops good, successful citizens. If I could get current addresses and phone numbers of persons who are no longer fencing in Saskatchewan, I will contact them and ask them what they are currently up to. I think it would be truly interesting. For example, one gentleman of my acquaintance taught in China for a year, is now teaching in Toronto while serving in the Militia as an Armoured Recce Troop Leader. Another is in Vancouver working at the exclusive Vancouver Club. We do associate with good, talented people and this should be emphasized both as a selling point in the community at large and as a model to younger athletes in Fencing. But I truly doubt that I am the only person with ideas. This is your big chance to publish. As the Editor, I welcome those who want to put their insights on paper. Submissions should be typed or printed on clean paper and your name address and phone number should also be included so that I can further contact you. I have few problems if you disagree with what is published as long as you can provide thoughtful input. Please do not think that your concerns and ideas have already been thought of. Maybe yes, maybe no. But you won't know until you try. |
