Coach of the Year
The Saskatchewan Fencing Association would like to extend its congratulations to Maitre Claude Séguin, who was awarded the Coaching Association of Canada's Coach of the Year for Junior Development in Fencing. Claude received his award in Montreal on October 26-27, but I don't think he's told many people about it. Those of you who are juniors and are benefiting from Claude's expert tutelage, take a minute to thank him. I know that he thanks you for being such excellent students!

SFA Home Page
This will be a one-stop site for Fencing information in Saskatchewan. It will be updated on a weekly basis. Tournament entry forms (such as the Regina Open) can be viewed and downloaded; tournament results are also quickly posted. addresses for SFA Directors and Officers are also there. The SFA Rules & Regulations can be downloaded.

The address of the SFA website is:

Coaches:
Some of you have expressed an interest in pursuing the glamorous life of a Fencing Coach. In a manner similar to Bert Gaudet's in dealing with the desire to become Presidents de Jury, there should be a formal statement of intent in writing. The Coaching Association of Saskatchewan offers NCCP theory course for levels 1, 2 and 3. Maitre Seguin conducts fencing specific technical courses and a certain amount of apprentice training must be taken under the tutelage of a senior coach.

Please send formal notices of intent to:

by Dennis Duncan

What with the tournament season now upon us, it might be useful to know what equipment is required for the various tournament levels. Manuel Belmonte , VP Technical, CFF sent the following letter to Provincial Presidents around the country. It is quoted here.

RE: Equipment Requirements for 1996/97 Fencing Season

The minimum equipment requirements for the new fencing season will not change from what was required last year.

The new bib rule (that the bib is target in foil) is mentioned in the rules, however it is not yet in effect.

Editor's Note: In the next issue of the SaskSword, in keeping with the practical theme, the body of the FIE rules cited at the bottom of most tournament registration forms will be published, so that you can finally know what the heck they mean.
