Notes from the SFA President

by Janet Simpson

Hello and welcome to a new fencing season! Although this is the second issue of this season's SaskSword, this is my first opportunity to speak as SFA President. I hope to get out and meet everyone in the fencing community but until then, I'll quickly introduce myself so you know who I am and what I know about fencing.

I have been fencing off and on since 1980. I started fencing in Saskatoon with the Saskatoon Fencing Club as a foil fencer but later switched to epee. I coached in Saskatoon and am presently coaching with Bert Gaudet in Prince Albert. I left fencing in 1990 to move and teach in northern Saskatchewan. Last year I accepted a job in Prince Albert and was able to get back into fencing. I am pleased to see a few familiar faces throughout the fencing community. I do see a lot of new faces and I am looking forward to meeting these people!

My goals for this year are to meet everyone "old and new". In addition, I will continue with the past efforts of the association to promote our sport across Saskatchewan. I am excited about the great ideas presented by members of the SFA to promote our sport. I look forward to being a part of this promotion. As a coach and past female competitor I hope to encourage more girls into joining fencing. Most of all, I look forward to re-acquainting myself with the "world of fencing".

Last but certainly not least, I would like to say "Thank you" to Trudi Barlow for all her hard work and commitment to the sport of fencing. I know that the work that was done before me will make my job as President much easier due to Trudi's commitment. "Thank you" Trudi!
