Week 1 Final Results

Team Saskatchewan had a very successful first week at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in Bathurst-Campbellton. The team was lead in the medal count by Speed skating, capturing twelve out of a possible 24 medals. Kerri Simpson, of Melville led the team with four GOLD medals in long track. She set Canada Games records in each of the events. Joining Kerri on the podium were Tyler Johnston (Moose Jaw), with GOLD medals in the men’s 3000 m and the men’s 5000 meter, a silver in the 500m. Joining Kerri on the podium in the women’s 1500 meter were Chelsey Parker ((Saskatoon) with the silver, and Alexandra Wrebluski (Regina) with a bronze. Chelsey Parker (Saskatoon) also got as silver in the 1500m and a bronze in the 3000 m long track. Alexandra Wrebluski also got SILVER in the 3000 meter.

The fencing team added to the medal count by getting 4 medals, with Shannon Comerford of (Grandora) silver in the individual women’s foil. The women’s team foil team made up of Shannon Comerford, Kea Archibold (Saskatoon) and Jessie Jardine (Regina) got the bronze. The men’s team sabre team made up of Kent Witchekan (Asquith), Brent Currie (Saskatoon) and Derek Strelioff (Saskatoon) captured the bronze. Derek Strelioff also got bronze in the men’s individual sabre.

The total medal count for Team Saskatchewan sits at 16.

Badminton ended up in 8th place, Cross Country Skiing ended up in 11th place, the Women’s Curling team ended up in 8th spot. Men’s Team Foil took 6th place Women’s Team Epee ended up in 7th, Men’s Hockey ended up in 5th, Ringette came in 6th. Men’s Squash was 4th and Women’s Squash was 6th, and Wheelchair Basketball ended the tournament in 6th place, Rhythmic Gymnastics ended up 7th.

Team Saskatchewan has 74.5 flag points.

The second half athletes are arriving today, with competition starting tomorrow.
