New Club Development/Clinics/Demonstrations

Throughout the year, the SFA and its member clubs hold Learn-to-Fence clinics and fencing demonstrations throughout the province.

Whenever possible, clinics in schools are provided on request, and this past summer clinics were held in numerous zones as part of the Zone Sport Councils' summer sports programs.

For communities or organizations interested in establishing a fencing club or hosting a clinic, the SFA has prepared an information package explaining fencing in general and describing the services provided pertaining to introductory clinics, club start-up assistance, and coaching instruction.

To receive this information package or for additional information, please call the SFA Office at (306) 975-0823 or send email to saskfencing@shaw.ca.

Officials Development

'P' Level Certification

The SFA has recently developed a program to certify officials at 'P' Level. Interested persons should contact Doug Brecht, (306) 329-4280, or Brian Zulkoskey ((306) 477-1396, 117 McMaster Cres, Saskatoon SK  S7H 4E1).

Candidates will be partnered with an 'N' Level official. The 'N' level official will provide instruction on the rules of fencing and the candidate will train under the 'N' official at three provincial tournaments. During the training period, the 'N' official will impart knowledge, advice, and feedback to the candidate.

Following the training period, an 'N' official will conduct a practical evaluation of the candidate at a fourth provincial tournament and will administer a comprehensive rules exam.

The 'N' official will then make a recommendation to the Technical Committee as to whether or not the candidate should be awarded 'P' Level Certification. In the event that a candidate is unsuccessful, the evaluation will be repeated with a different 'N' examiner. Should the candidate be unsuccessful in the second evaluation, the candidate will be advised to continue training with an 'N' official.

Officials Funding

To promote officiating at local competitions, officials will be paid for officiating according to the following scale:

Trainee $10/day + lunch
'P' Level $40/day + lunch
'N' Level $75/day + lunch

(Note that trainees and 'P' level officials must officiate for the entire day to qualify for payment.)

'P' or 'N' level officials who wish to receive funding to travel to officiate at out-of-province tournaments should contact Brian Zulkoskey ((306) 477-1396, 117 McMaster Cres, Saskatoon SK  S7H 4E1).

To qualify for travel funding, 'P' or 'N' level officials must officiate at four local (in-province) tournaments.

Coaching Development

The SFA is very fortunate to have the services of Maître Claude Séguin as Provincial Coach and Technical Advisor.

Maître Séguin is an NCCP-certified Course Conductor and Master Course Conductor, meaning that he can not only train coaches, but can also train others to train coaches.

Maître Séguin was instrumental in establishing the Master/Apprentice model for development of NCCP Level III coaches. Three of the SFA's Level III coaches have achieved certification under Maître Séguin's instruction and supervision.

Maître Séguin also conducts NCCP Levels I and II Technical Clinics as demand warrants.

In addition, Coaching Skill Development Clinics are run periodically during the fencing season.

Persons interested in obtaining coaching certification at any level, or wanting information on coaching clinics, should contact the SFA's Coaching Coordinator, Jerry Johnson, at (306) 545-9689 or the SFA Office at (306) 975-0823 (email saskfencing@shaw.ca).

The SFA offers Provincial Training Squad and Athlete Assistance programs for its athletes.

The SFA Technical Committee approves the selection of athletes for the Training Squad and approves the selection of some of these athletes to receive Athlete Assistance grants.

Selection is based on national ranking, training habits, potential for improvement, and other criteria that may be determined by the Technical Committee. Athletes who are achieving outstanding results and are likely to benefit from an extensive schedule of high-calibre competitions will be recommended for athlete assistance grants.

Benefits to the selected athletes are the squad training program, the squad training camps, and, for some of the athletes, partial funding for travel to competitions.

Successful applicants are expected to follow the training program, training seriously in their clubs on at least two nights per week. The competition program may involve extensive out-of-province travel, and elite events require FIE clothing and FIE blades. Since ground expenses and personal equipment costs are the fencers' responsibilities, they must have the financial resources necessary to follow the competition program.

Athletes selected to the SFA Provincial Squad must sign the SFA/Athlete Agreement.
