Congratulations to Jean-Pierre Seguin -
Sask Sport Youth Male Athlete of the Year for 2002.

April 3, 2002 - Jean-Pierre Séguin of Saskatoon is the new World Champion in Cadet (Under-17) Men's Epee.  Jean-Pierre, a member of the Saskatoon Fencing Club and one of three Saskatchewan athletes on the National Team, is competing at the 2002 Junior and Cadet World Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

Jean-Pierre advanced from the first round with a record of 4 victories and 1 defeat, ranking him 13th out of the 101 entrants representing 46 countries.  Jean-Pierre reached the quarter-finals with victories of 15-4 over Fenwick of Ireland, 15-7 over Allika of Estonia, and 15-8 over Kramarics of Norway.  Jean-Pierre then defeated Sima of Sweden (5th seed) 15-14 in the quarter-final, Limardo of Venezuela (8th seed) 15-14 in the semi-final, and Tchernov of Russia (6th seed) 15-9 to win gold.

Jean-Pierre, 16, was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan  He attends Holy Cross High School and is a member of the Saskatoon Fencing Club.  He is coached by his father, Claude Séguin, who has been Provincial Coach for the Saskatchewan Fencing Association since 1979.

Jean-Pierre's gold medal at World Championships caps an outstanding Cadet career.  Since June of 1999 Jean-Pierre has won all but one of the six Cadet Men's Epee National Selection competitions and he has won the past three Cadet National Championships.  Jean-Pierre is also the current Junior (Under-20) National Champion and he won a bronze medal at the 2001 Senior (Open) Nationals.
