Yanik executed two ankle picks and a fireman’s throw in the 63 kilogram division match in route to her victory. There were 27 competitors in the division.

“I feel really fantasic,” said Yanik. “It’s my first time coming to the championships. It’s definitely a big accomplishment for me,” she said.

“When Viola hit that nice knee pick right off the top of the match I knew she was dialed in and ready to go,” said women’s coach Leigh Verling. “It made a big difference it gave her confidence for the rest of the match. It’s a combination of a lot of hard work, I’m really proud of her.”

Yanik said her experience in New York has been overwhelming.

“Standing on a mat in Madison Square Garden with thousands of spectators is really overwhelming. But, it’s a fantastic experience and a chance of a lifetime,” she continued.
