NEW ROOKIE PROGRAMS BEING DEVELOPED
Combining successful elements of the old Rookie and Junior Mosquito program with the concepts of Baseball Canada's Rally Cap and Canada's Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD) model is producing new made-in-Saskatchewan Rookie baseball programs. These programs follow the concepts of the "FUNdamentals" stage of the LTAD model and stress developing fundamental movement (agility, balance, coordination and speed) and basic baseball skills (hitting, receiving, throwing and running) at an age- and developmentally appropriate level. They are driven jointly by coaches and parents and are designed to create a fun learning environment for the players.

The new Rookie programs target boys and girls 6 to 9 years old since sport science has shown that only from ages 6 to 8 should a child start focusing on the skills related to our sport. Prior to that age, it is felt more important to involve children in a variety of activities that provide a full range of fundamental movement skills such as the LEAP/HOP or Push2Play programs.

The new Junior Rookie program will be tested provincially in 2011 by a number of baseball associations including Saskatoon Minor Baseball. A new Senior Rookie program is in development and may also be available for testing this year. At this level LTAD principles recommend that children participate in a wide range of sporting activities. To allow players to do this, Saskatoon Minor Baseball will try to schedule Rookie teams on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday basis whenever possible.
