Maître John Brunning
Certified Aide Moniteur Facilitator and Evaluator
Fencing began for John in 1981 at the University of Saskatchewan. He was a member of the Saskatchewan provincial team from 1982 to 1993. He fenced both foil and epee, winning provincials in both before retiring in 1993.
John's instructional and coaching experience includes: the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon Fencing Clubs since 1987; the YMCA and 15 Wing Clubs in Moose Jaw since 1995; and the Massey Place Community Association from 1999-2003.
John worked with the Canada Games athletes in 1991, 1995 and 1999 before being selected to be on the Team Saskatchewan coaching staff in 2003 and 2007. Additional international coaching experience includes the Cadet/Junior World Championship in South Bend, Indiana and as a personal coach at the
2001 Cadet/Junior World Championships in Gdansk, Poland.
Maître Lynn Séguin
The modern pentathlon was Lynn's first love and earned her Canadian Female Athlete of the
Year in 1983 (Velma
Springstead Award). It also introduced Lynn to fencing. Finding a coach was a challenge and when modern pentathletes in Maple Ridge BC asked for her help she began coaching fencing and started the Maple Ridge fencing club in 1994.
Lynn's instructional and coaching experience includes: the University of Saskatchewan Fencing Club, Saskatoon Fencing Club, and the Prince Albert Fencing Club.
Working with the Canada Games athletes as part of the Team Saskatchewan coaching
staff in 2003 and 2007 has provided further experience.
Together with Claude Séguin, Lynn operates Salle Séguin in Saskatoon. The Salle
is the training centre for both the Saskatoon and University of Saskatchewan fencing clubs.
Past Coaches (Retired):
Level III Foil
The University of Saskatchewan provided Brian's introduction to fencing in 1980. He was a member of the Saskatchewan provincial team from 1980 to 1990,
winning the provincial foil championship numerous times. Brian has held many
administrative positions in fencing in the province including President of the
Saskatchewan Fencing Association for seventeen years and Technical Director (DT) at Saskatchewan
tournaments for nine years. Brian has been a foil coach for the Saskatoon and
University of Saskatchewan Fencing Clubs since 1990. He has successfully trained
athletes at the national level (Cadet Men's Foil National Champion - 2008; Jr.
Women's Team Foil National Champions - 2008; Jr. Women's Foil - silver, 2010;
Men's Team Foil - silver, 2007; Jr. Women's Foil - bronze, 2009). Brian was an
official at the Canada Winter Games in 1991, 1995 and 1999 and manager of the Saskatchewan
Fencing Team at the 2003 and 2007 Canada Winter Games. Additional coaching
experience includes Brian's work with baseball as an assistant coach at the Midget
AAA (2006 and 2009) and Junior AAA (2007) levels.
